With the latest technology  and the introduction of the concept “free”, many small businesses and individuals have been benefited of these latest technology trends.

Imagine that  in the past in order for you to have a website you needed to be an expert on HTML code (programmer) or pay thousands of dollars to have a website.  Well, this is not the case anymore! There are hundreds of website hosts that have the concept of “free” and the tools are very easy to use, they even provide video training for you… how much? FREE as in no cost.  However, that has another side of the coin as well, most of these services offer you this for “free” because they know that in the future you will need more and more and then you have to do use the “up grade” services, which usually is not that much about $5 and up per month depending on the needs of the client (memory, database etc.), but the most important part of this is that you don’t have to pay them for every time you need to make a change in your website! Why, because the tools they use makes it easy for you.  Some are business oriented like Google sites, others are open source like WordPress, but at the end you can save thousands of dollars…

magine que en el pasado para que usted pudiera tener su propio sitio de internet, tuviera que ser un experto en codigo HTML (programador) o bien pagar miles de dólares por que le hicieran su página de internet. Bueno, pero este no es el caso! Hy cientos de sitios que le dan el servicio para su página (web host) que ofrecen el concepte “gratis” y las herramientas para hacer cambios son muy faciles de usar.  haste le ofrecen video-entrenamientos… por cuante? GRATIS. Sinembargo hay otra cara de la moneda, la mayoría de estos servicios le ofrecen esto gratis porque saben que en el futuro usted necesitará más capacidad de memoria y otras herramientas que no son gratis, así que le ofrecen los famosos “up grades” actualizaciones (con más memoria, base de datos etc.)que regularmente cuestan desde $5 dólares, pero lo más importante es que no tiene que pagarles cada vez que necesite que le hagan un cambio por que usted mismo lo puede hacer debido a lo sencillo que es usar estas plataformas!  Algunas de estas plataformas son con fines de lucro como Google y otros son los llamados “open source” disponibles para todos como WordPress, así que al final usted puede ahorrar miles de dólares…

Durante muchos años el tema de migración en este país ha sido una fuente de opiniones encontradas entre los que están en contra de la migración y los que la defineden. Según el diccionario de la lengua española, el término migración se refiere a  el “Desplazamiento geográfico de individuos o grupos, generalmente por causas económicas o sociales.”  De aquí que nace el tema de la “otra” migración ya que la migración no solo se produce al cruzar la frontera de un país, sino también la de un estado.

Ayer cuatro oficiales del departamento de policia de la ciudad de Lakewood, Washington, fueron asesinados por un ciudadano americano proveniente del estado de Arkansa (migrante para el estado de Washington). Y aquí es dónde nos debemos preguntar cual de los dos tipos de migración nos debe preocupar más. La del migrante que viene a trabajar en la agricultura o a ofrecer su ayuda afuera de Home Depot o el del migrante americano que entra a nuestro estado con record criminal y mata a sangre fria a  cuatro policias?

Las autoridades nos han tratado de convencer por mucho tiempo que los migrantes provenientes de otros paises son una amenaza para la seguridad pública, pero se les olvido prevenirnos de los ciudadanos americanos que migran de un estado a otro.  Como es posible que Maurice Clemmons siendo un criminal pudiera andar de un estado a otro sin ser perseguido a pesar de todos los crimenes que cometió?

For many years the theme of migration in this country has been a controversial issue.  According to the definition of migration in the web this means the movement of persons from one country or locality to another. This is where the “other” migration between states is born.

Yesterday four officers from the Lakewood Police department, were killed by an American citizen who migrated from the state of Arkansas to the state of Washington.  This is when we need to stop and think which of the two migrations we should worry about. The migration of hard working people that come to Washington State to work in the farms or outside Home Depot or the migration of American citizens from other states who have a criminal record and killed four officers?

The authorities have tried to convince us for many years that the migration of people from other countries is a threat for our safety, but they failed to warn us of the migration of American citizens that move from state to state.   How it was possible for Maurice Clemmons who had a criminal to move from one state to another without any intervention from the authorities?

According to the William C. Velasquez Institute the total of register voters in the State of  Washington in 2008, is 4.9 million and 404 thousand (4.8%) of the total voters population were Latino.  A  4.8% may look like a small amount, but in an election, this percentage can mean a victory.

The State of Washington will vote in 2010 to either re-elect the current senator Patty Murray who has been a senator for almost 20 years or to elect a new senator.  One of the candidates is Dr. Sean Salazar, a member of an extended family that is of Latino and African-American heritage.  Dr. Salazar was born in Seattle, Washington and grew up in different low income housing projects in Seattle, but regardless of all the financial obstacles, he became a Chiropractor and a model citizen for Latinos. Dr. Salazar is an independent conservative candidate who claims to be a strong believer of the United State Constitution. In addition, he is a big supporter of an immigration reform and this is important for all undocumented Latinos who struggle everyday as a result of the lack of an immigration reform.

* It is important to point out that the last immigration reform,  Immigration Reform and Control Act was signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986 and since then, there has not been any other reform, only promises.

Now the questions is if Dr. Salazar will obtain the Latino vote in the coming US Senate elections.    The answer is on our hands, but should we vote for someone just because is Latino? This will means that someone wins just because of something that he/she represents rather than for who he/she is. For example,  (D) Senator Murray has won the US Senate for the past three elections, but does this means that the people of Washington votes for her only because she is a democrat and a woman?

We all know that  the State of Washington is well known as a Democrat State, but  that may  be because of the King County/Seattle voters which represents almost 1.1 million voters according to the recent general voter registration of the State of Washington . Many candidates will try to win the vote of the minorities in order to win this election, whether is Senator Murray, Dr. Sean Salazar or others, the fact that now there is a candidate that represent us Latinos and we owe him at least the chance to find out who he is and what he represents not only for Latinos, but for the entire State of Washington.  To find more information about Dr. Sean Salazar visit his website at: http://www.seanforsenate.com/

De acuerdo con el Instituto William C. Velasquez el total de los votantes registrados en el estado de Washington en el 2008 es de 4.9 millones y de estos 404 mill (4.8%) son Latinos. Un 4.8% puede parecer muy poco, pero en una elección este número puede representar una victoria.

El estado de Washington votará en el 2010 ya sea para reelegir a la senadora Patty Murray, quien ha sido senadora por casi 20 años o para elejir a un nuevo senador. Uno de los candidatos es el Dr. Sean Salazar, miembro de un familia con origen latino y afroamericano.  El Dr. Salazar nació en Seattle, Washington y creció en diferentes programas de hogar para familias con bajos recursos, pero a pesar de los obtáculos financieros, se convirtió en un doctor chiropráctico y en un ciudadano ejemplar a seguir.  El Dr. Salazar es un candidato conservador independiente quien dice ser un fiel creyente de la constitución de los Estados Unidos. Además apoya la idea de una reforma migratoria lo cual es muy importante para todos los latinos indocumentados que luchan todos los días por la falta de una reforma migratoria.

* Es importante recordar que la última reforma migratoria, la ley de amnistia (IRCA) fue firmada por el Presidente Ronald Reagan en 1986 y desde entonces no se ha concretado ninguna otra reforma migratoria, solo promesas.

 

Ahora la pregunta es sí el Dr. Salazar obtendrá el voto latino en las próximas elecciones para senador estatal.  La respuesta está en nuestras manos, pero deberiamos votar por el por su conexión con la comunidad latina? Esto querría decir que alguien ganaría la elección solo por algo que representa y no por sus méritos como candidato.  Por ejemplo, la senadora Murray (demócrata) ha ganado las ultimas 3 elecciones a senador estatal, pero esto significa que Washington vota por ella solo porque es demócrata y mujer?

Todos sabemos que el estado de Washington es conocido por ser un estado demócrata, pero esto puede ser por el número de votantes en el Condado King/Seattle, el cual representa 1.1 millones de votantes de acuerdo a la más reciente registración en el estado de Washington.  Muchos candidatos tratarán de ganar el voto de las minorias para ganar las elecciones, sea la senadora Murray, el Dr. Sean Salazar u otros, la realidad es que existe un candidato que representa una conexión directa con la comunidad latina y le debemos por lo menos la oportunidad de informarnos quien es él y que representa nos solo para los latinos sino para todo el estado de Washngton. Shorten URLs/Acortadores de URL

I remember when I wanted to add a link to a good article in my tweets, but the majority of the URLs where too long for the space provided by Twitter. Then, I discovered the shorten URLs services like Tiny, Tr.im, or Ito (from Mexico and in Spanish). At that time I thought “This is wonderful”, but just few weeks ago, I read a tweet about information on tips for Twitter and a link.  I immediately clicked on the link to find out those tips that could help me to improve my tweets, but the link took me to a website with no tips.  At the moment, I thought, that there was a glitch within these services. Links can take you anywhere including to websites which you wish never to visit or link to a PDF that contains a computer virus.  One solution was not to open any links from anyone you don´t know, but then what is the point of these services for Twitter? Another solution is for these shorten URLs companies to add a feature to their links that if you place the cursor on the shorten URL link, it will show you the actual URL address.  What do you think?

Technology and its risks…

Todavía me acuerdo de cuando quería agregar un enlace a un buen articulo en mis tweets, pero la mayoría de los enlaces eran largos para el espacio limitado de Twitter. Entonces descubrí el servicio de los acortadores de URL como Tiny, Tr.im, Ito (de Mexico y en español) y otros más.  En ese entonces pensé “Esto es maravilloso”, pero hace un par de semanas, leí un tweet sobre un sitio con consejos para Twitter que incluía un enlace abreviado a un sitio donde se suponía estaría esta información, pero este enlace me llevo a un sitio donde no estaba esta información. Entonces pensé que estos servicios tenían una falla de protección al usuario, que tal que uno de estos enlaces te lleve a sitios de internet que habrías querido nunca visitar o a un documento PDF que contenga un virus.  Una solución sería no confiar en los enlaces que ofrecen otros en Twitter, pero entonces cual sería el punto de estos servicios de acortadores? Otra solución sería que estos servicios de abreviación, incorporaran de alguna forma que cuando posicionaras el cursor sobre el enlace acortado, pues te mostrara la dirección del URL real. Que piensas de esto?

El gobierno federal de México ha creado un programa de micro negocios para migrantes mexicanos a través de Sedesol. Este programa permite a los migrantes mexicanos a invertir en un negocio pequeño con algún amigo o familiar que viva en México y el gobierno federal ayuda con la misma cantidad invertida.  Por ejemplo sí usted invierte $500 dólares en poner un puesto de jugos con su hermano que vive en México, el gobierno le aporta $500 dólares, esto quiere decir que usted tiene $1,000 dólares para empezar su negocio de jugos en México -usted puede seguir viviendo en los Estados Unidos sí asi lo desea-.

Que tengo que hacer? Debe de formar o ser parte de un club de migrantes el cual recibe apoyo directo del Consulado de México. Este club debe contar con un mínimo de 5 miembros. Muchos de ustedes ya perteneces a clubs aquí en los Estados Unidos, como el club de Jalisco.

Debo pagar intereses y que plazo tengo para pagar? Este programa no le cobra intereses y tiene un periodo de hasta 3 años para recuperar esta inversión, la cual es pagada al club de migrantes para que este dinero sea reinvertido en ayudar a otros a que tengan su propio negocio en México.

Como funciona? La persona que vive en los Estados Unidos debe de formar or pertenecer a un club que cuente con un mínimo de 5 miembros.  Estos clubs deberan contar con la Toma de Nota del Consulado de México que corresponda al domicilio actual del migrante (Formato 3×1-C)

Por que hace esto el gobierno? Para ayudar a que más mexicanos pongan su propio negocio con la ayuda económica de estos clubs y la del gobierno para que los mexicanos ya no tengan la necesidad de salir de México en busca de una oportunidad de empleo y los que se encuentran viviendo fuera de México puedan regresar y trabajar en su propio negocio en México.

Cual es la cantidad máxima que presta el gobierno? El gobierno federal puede prestarle hasta $300, 000 pesos (unos 22,466 dólares a el precio del dólar el día de hoy 9-25-09) Esto quiere decir que sí usted tiene para invertir en un negocio $300,000 pesos el gobierno federal le prestará otros $300,000 pesos (un total de unos $44,932 dólares a el precio del dólar el día de hoy)

Y quién me ayuda con todos estos trámites? El personal del Consulado de México que le corresponda. Usted no hará todo el trabajo solo, el personal del Consulado de México le ayudara con todo el proceso. El 15% de la inversión total se usa para financiar la asesoría técnica.

Agunas ideas: talleres mécanicos, panaderías, fondas, talleres de costura, cafeterías, jardín de niños, tiendas naturistas etc.

Now Mexican immigrants can have their own business with the help of the Federal Mexican Government through Sedesol. The Mexican Government has created a program that matches the amount of an investment up to $300,00 pesos (about $22,466 dollars at today’s dollar price 9/25/09) This means that if an immigrant invest $300,000 pesos, they will have a total of $600,000 pesos to invest (about $44,932 dollars at today’s dollar price). No interest is charged and they have up to 3 years to pay it back.

What are the requirements: They need to belong and/or form a club with a minimum of 5 members.

Is there any help available: Yes, the personal of Sedesol or the personal of the Mexican Consulate of your area will help you with all the process.  About 15% of the investment goes to technical advise.

Why is the Mexican Government doing this: in an effort to help Mexicans to own their own business and can go back to Mexico and/or to help Mexicans to own their own business and stay in Mexico with the help of these clubs.

Twitter in Chile/ Twitter en Chile

Today at 7:40 pm Chile’s Presidential Debate 2009 began.  This debate was followed by many Chileans in and outside Chile, using Twitter.  This shows that Twitter is a tool that may serve to democratize the communication between the government/politician and the people of Chile. This South American country is using technology to bring a true democracy to their people.

Hoy a las 7:40 pm inició el debate presidencial de Chile 2009.  Este debate se siguió segundo a segundo por Twitter. Esto es una muestra de que Twitter es una herrmienta que puede servir para democratizar la comunicación entre el gobierno/los políticos y la gente de Chile. El país sudamericano está usando la tecnología para llevar una verdadera democracia a su gente.

Labor Day/Dia del Trabajo

Monday was Labor Day and for many it presented a long weekend either to rest, to go out of the city, or simply to work on their garden. However, for many immigrants was just another day of work or hoping for work.  As my husband and I were pulling over a Home Depot to get some materials to fix our roof, we noticed about 15 to 20 men waiting at the entrance of the parking lot.  As we passed them they wave at us with a signal to request work.  Unfortunately,  as much as I wanted to help I couldn’t afford it.   These are men that are willing to work for very little money, but they rather work for it than someone just give it to them.   I remembered then the long lines of homeless people waiting outside a food bank waiting for a meal while on the opposite corner there was long line of immigrants waiting for work underneath hwy 99 in Down Town Seattle.

This is a reflection of how our society is so wrong on judging the immigrants, they have not arrived to this country to ask for free food or housing or even medical care.  They came to work, to earn a living and show that they can make a positive difference in this country. They work hard for very little money with no benefits and  in time of economic crisis they even work for food. These are workers that do not have a holiday or vacation time. Whether this is right or wrong, it is not for me to say.  I just want to knowledge their efforts and their suffering on Labor Day.

El lunes fue día del trabajo y para muchos esto significó un fin de semana largo para descansar, salir de la ciudad o simplemente para trabajar en su jardín. Sinembargo, para muchos inmgrantes fue solo un día mas de trabajo.  Mientras mi esposo y yo llegabamos a una tienda de Home Depot para comprar materiales para arreglar nuestro techo, notamos que cerca de 15 a 20 hombres esperaban en la entrada del estacionamiento. Al pasar cerca de ellos nos hicieron señas pidiendo trabajo. Desafortunadamente, aunque quería ayudar no pude. Estos son hombres que están dispuestos a trabajar por muy poco dinero, pero prefieren trabajar a que alguien se los de.  Recordé entonces las largas filas de indigentes esperando ser alimentados por un banco de comida, mientras en la contra-esquina había una larga fila de inmigrantes esperando -abajo del puente de la carretera 99 en el Centro de Seattle- a que alguien les diera trabajo.

Esta es una reflección de como nuestra sociedad se equivoca cuando juzga a los inmigrantes, ellos no han venido a este país ni a pedir comida,  alojamiento o cuidado médico gratis.  Vinieron a trabajar, a ganarse la vida y mostrar que ellos pueden ser un cambio positivo para este país.  Ellos trabajan por poco dinero, sin beneficios y en tiempo de crisis hasta por comida.  Ellos son trabajadores sin días festivos o vacaciones. Sí esto es correcto o no,  no está en mí decirlo. Solo quiero mostrar sus esfuerzos y su sufrimiento en conmemoración al día del trabajo.

Sonia Sotomayor se ha convertido en un ejemplo a seguir para todos los hispanos que vivimos en Estados Unidos.  Sonia Sotomayor es la una de las pruebas más grandes de que el esfuerzo y sacrificio es compensado.  Pero este esfuerzo no es fácil, me pregunto cuantas veces la juez se desveló o dejó de ir al cine con sus amigos por estudiar y completar sus tareas. Ser estudiante no es fácil, es un reto diario y siempre tienes la opción de elegir si estudias o te diviertes.

La verdad es que para algunos de nosotros los hispanos va  aún más allá de esto, nosotros enfrentamos una barrera más… o estudias o trabajas para ayudar a tu familia. Sonia Sotomayor es la muestra de un sacrificio enorme, no solo por parte de ella, sino de su madre también que estudió y lucho para poder tener una vida mejor.  Y ese es exactamente el mensaje de hoy, debemos estudiar. Para algunos el sacrificio es más grande, pero al final vale la pena y Sonia Sotomayor es el mejor ejemplo de lucha, esfuerzo y sacrificio que al final la llevo a ser el gran orgullo de todos los hispanos que vivimos en Estados Unidos.  Hoy más que nunca me siento orgullosa y feliz de ser mujer y de ser hispana.

¡Gracias Sonia Sotomayor por tu ejemplo y por la esperanza que tú representas para nosotros los que como tú ahora luchamos y nos sacrificamos por tener una mejor educación y crear un mundo mejor para todos los hispanos!

Sonia Sotomayor has become a role model for the Hispanic community that lives in the United States.  Sonia Sotomayor is great example that effort and sacrifice is compensated. But this effort was not easy, I wonder how many times the judge did not get enough sleep or did not go to the movies with her friends because instead she studied or did her homework. Being a student is not an easy task, is a daily effort that comes with two choices, you can study or you can have fun.

The truth is that for some of us, Hispanics this goes beyond that, we have another barrier to overcome… either we study or we work to help our family. Sonia Sotomayor is an example of this sacrifice, not only hers, but her mother’s as well.  He mother also chose to studied and fought to have a better life.  And that is today’s message, we have to study.  For some the sacrifice is greater, but at the end it is worth it and Sonia Sotomayor is the best illustration of this effort, fight and sacrifice that at the end made her a Hispanic pride. Today more than ever, I am proud and happy to be a woman and Hispanic.

Thank you Sonia Sotomayor for your exemplary work and for the hope that you represent for all of us who are working and sacrificing for a better education and to create a better world for the Hispanic community in the United States!
